I have a pretty tough time dealing with BO (body odor) when I have to take a bus to work, and who wouldn’t? To add to that problem, I also have a nasty case of BO if I am not careful. I sweat extremely easily in warm places and even after drinking coffee, and I drink a lot of coffee. We all have our own go-to deodorant since hitting puberty. I’ve used Secret, Dove, and Lady Speed Stick in the form of powder and gel. When I started my college years, I noticed that my armpits would become very itchy and noticed eczema patches. I had already known that I have eczema but I did not know that I could get it under my armpits as well. I wondered if there was something in these popular deodorant brands that my skin had become sensitive to. I found this Crystal Essence Mineral Deodorant Roll-On -Pomegranate that is marketing labeled with “Hypoallergenic”, “Paraben free”, and “No Aluminum Chlorohydrate”.
Ingredients : Purified Water, Natural Mineral Salts, Potassium Alum Cellulose, Pomegranate Fragrance Essential Oils and Extracts
Directions : Must be applied to clean skin.
I was a bit worried about it being scented, but after using it, my armpits were no longer itchy nor did I get anymore eczema flare ups in that area. I realized that I needed these natural type of deodorants. This isn’t an antiperspirant as it does not prevent perspiration, but it does cover up the BO smell. If you are looking for an antiperspirant, then this product is not for you. I have yet to find an antiperspirant that is made more naturally. The scent has a subtle sweetness and not overpowering at all. The scent goes away in a few seconds.
The important thing to realize here is that the deodorant is most effective when applied on clean skin. BO is caused by a bacteria on specific parts of your body, near your sweat glands, that feeds off the sweat. The ingredients in Crystal Deodorant work by inhibiting/slowing down the growth of this bacteria. Thus, this is why the product MUST be applied to freshly bathed, CLEAN skin, since it needs a clean slate to start with. I have developed the habit in leaving this in the bathroom and using it as soon as I dry myself after showering as that is when my skin is most clean, and it’s not hard to stick to this habit. I was actually more likely to forget to use my old deodorants when I was getting ready in the hectic mornings (yes, I admit to having forgotten using my deodorant). Even if I shower at night, the effects of this deodorant is still working its game throughout the next day. (I have not tested if it can last me til the 2nd day without showering.)
This deodorant comes in other scents too. When I was running low on this Pomegranate one after almost 2 years of use, I decided to get the Chamomile & Green Tea Body Spray. I am not certain on this thought, but in my mind, it makes more hygienic sense to get a spray kind of deodorant rather than anything that has direct contact with the skin. This one has a stronger scent than the pomegranate one due to the Chamomile, but it’s a very flowery-woodsy kind of scent that dissipates just as quickly. This 4 fl oz has lasted me for about 3 years so far as I only need to spray once on each armpit. (2+ sprays will have the liquid flowing down from my armpit as it needs time for the skin to absorb the first spray.) It does take a few seconds (~20s for one spray) for the skin to absorb so I do the chicken dance or put on my pants while I wait those few seconds out. The only problem I’ve had with this is that I can’t bring it with me in my carry-on bag in the airport when I first started using this product. It wasn’t a problem anymore after more than half of it was used. Another great thing about a spray version is that it can be sprayed on other smelly areas of the body such as my feet.

This Crystal Essence brand product is not always found in every drugstore but it can be purchased on Amazon.

Potassium Alum (potassium aluminum sulphate) can be found in health food stores in just a clear, unscented crystal form, as well.
In the Philippines (and, possibly other parts of Asia) it’s called “tawas”, I’ve bought it as a powder, also, but it takes a bit of getting used to when trying to apply it.
My wife found that sodium bicarbonate (plain baking soda) works a bit better for her than tawas, but my skin gets irritated from the baking soda, and the tawas is less irritating on my skin.

Thank you for sharing. I will need to see if I can find it at a local health food store. I do prefer the roll on or spray packaging more as the powder form is a bit messy.
